Advantages
and Comparison
Natural
cork
|
Cork is a material traditionally
used to stopper wine bottles.
Its composition grants permeability (even if not homogeneous)
to oxygen from 1 to 700 times higher than the synthetic
cork.
The main problem of natural cork is the smell
of cork, caused by the trichloreanisole
TCA (the fungus found in the air during cork growing
and in the cork factory) and the tetrachloreanisole
- (the characteristic smell of mould which
is formed by air pollution or for accidental contacts,
also after the manufacturing process in the cork factory).

The others
cork defects are heritage of the tree itself, frequently
subject to changing environmental and climatic conditions
(dryness, irregular humidity) and the manufacturing
ones, which can be found in the material indentures.
This kind of stopper is frequently submitted to experts
negative comments, even where the best cork is selected. |
